Aimé Césaire"Poetic knowledge is born in the great silence of scientific knowledge."
- Aimé Césaire -

The Famous Poet Aimé Césaire from Martinique passed away on April 17, 2008. He had serious heart troubles and was admitted to Pierre Zobda Quitman hospital in Fort-de-France.

Who was Aimé Césaire?

Politician, writer, thinker, it only incarnated with him more than one half-century of the history of Martinique. Its influence on the various movements of the decolonization, in particular in Quebec, was major.

Aimé Césaire will have also crossed the political history of France and Martinique since the post-war period. In 2007, he had supported Ségolène Royal with the french presidential election.
His writings reflect his passion for civic and social engagement. According to Wikipedia, "He is the author of Discours sur le colonialisme (Discourse on Colonialism) (1953), a denunciation of European colonial racism which was published in the French review Présence Africaine. In 1968, he published the first version of Une Tempête, a radical adaptation of Shakespeare's play The Tempest for a black audience."

Here's a short video resuming his biography:

To my opinion, I suggest that Litterature and Political Schools and Depatments in University and High Schools truly emphasize to study his books, poetry and writings. I think when a figure as Aimé Césaire (I think of Leopold Senghor too) had a real impact in your cultures and political scenes, you have to adapt and reinforce the way he thought and his strategies in your society to increase:

  • How to run properly Governments structures (especially in Africa where there is a tendance of having a president staying for more than 10 to 20 years!!)

  • How to develop countries in the process of development (not to say poor countries...)

  • How to insert the writings of someone as Aimé Césaire to educate populations for better relations between individuals.
See, I had never never known that an adaptation of Shakespeare's play was written by Him. It's not fair! Really, I mean it! I have well studied poetry in high school, But never the ones written by Aimé Césaire. Well, I put this debate to side for the moment...

The director of the organisation The Toussaint Louverture of UNESCO Prize reminded that he received the price "intended to crown engagement for the recognition of the equality of the men and the cultures, and the fight against discriminations and exclusion".

Aimé Césaire was a passionate Human Being, an anti-colonialist, an engaged intellectual, a true believer and a fervent upholder of the Black Race.

As we say in Africa,
A large baobab tree fell.

It seems like this year lot of Baobabs fell. I think of James Brown and Luciano Pavarotti...

Red RoseMy sincere condolences to Aimé Césaire's family and friends.
